Sootblower Overhaul Process

A Sootblower Overhaul is a critical preventive and major maintenance procedure for boilers in power plants and industrial facilities. It ensures the sootblowing system operates at peak efficiency, prevents mechanical jamming, and minimizes the risk of boiler tube damage.

The overhaul process is generally divided into 4 main stages:

1. Pre-Overhaul & Inspection

Prior to disassembly, the current operational status is assessed to diagnose existing issues.

  • Visual & Operational Check: Inspect the equipment during operation to detect abnormal noises, vibrations, or steam leakages.

  • System Isolation: Implement full Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and isolate the main steam supply valve to ensure 100% safety before work begins.

  • Lance Tube Alignment Check: Inspect the straightness of the lance tube for any bending or warping.

2. Disassembly & Cleaning

Once the system is safely isolated, major components are dismantled for detailed inspection and cleaning.

  • Drive & Carriage Assembly Removal: Disassemble the electric motor, gearbox, and carriage assembly.

  • Lance Tube & Feed Tube Removal: Carefully support and remove the lance tube from the front support, and dismantle the internal steam feed tube and poppet valve.

  • Thorough Cleaning: Clean off old grease, soot, and debris from all parts using solvents or sandblasting where appropriate to expose the bare metal surface.

 

3. Inspection & Component Renewal

The core of the overhaul involves measuring and evaluating components against OEM specifications.

  • Gearbox & Motor: Replace gear oil, inspect gear teeth backlash, and replace all bearings and oil seals.

  • Poppet Valve Servicing: Perform valve lapping on the valve seat to prevent steam leakage, which is a primary cause of boiler tube erosion.

  • Lance Tube & Nozzle Inspection: Check for wear, wall thickness, and cracks—especially around the nozzles. Components falling below standards are repaired or replaced.

  • Sealing & Gasket Replacement: Renew all stuffing box packings and high-temperature gaskets to prevent steam leaks during extension and retraction.

  • Drive Mechanism: Inspect and replace worn drive chains, rollers, and tracks.

4. Reassembly & Commissioning

  • Reassembly: Rebuild all components, adjust chain tension, and apply high-temperature grease to all rotating parts and bearings.

  • Alignment: Align the lance tube precisely with the wall box to ensure smooth travel without friction or jamming.

  • Cold Test (Dry Run): Energize the system to test the travel of the sootblower, verifying that the limit switches trip accurately.

  • Hot Test (Steam Commissioning): Introduce steam to test real-world operation, verify nozzle popping pressure, and ensure zero leakage at all joints and the poppet valve.
